Definition
EU framework granting preferential capital treatment to securitizations meeting specified eligibility criteria.
STS (Simple, Transparent, Standardised) in plain English
When a bank bundles thousands of loans into a bond and sells slices to investors, that's called securitization — and it can get so complicated that nobody really knows what they're buying (this is part of what blew up in 2008). Europe's "STS" label is basically a quality stamp meaning the deal is Simple (easy to understand), Transparent (the loan details are actually disclosed), and Standardised (built the normal, boring way with no weird tricks). Think of it like a "nutrition label + inspection sticker" on a food product: it doesn't promise the food is healthy, just that it's honestly labeled and made to known standards. Deals that earn the STS label let banks hold less spare cash against them ("preferential capital treatment"), which is a reward for keeping things clean and readable.
