Senior Unsecured
Corporate Credit Analysis glossary · Distressed Debt & Restructuring
Definition
Debt that ranks senior but is not secured by specific collateral. Recovers from residual enterprise value after secured claims are satisfied; the dominant rating class for IG corporate bonds.
Senior Unsecured in plain English
Senior unsecured debt is also near the front of the repayment line if a company collapses, but unlike secured debt it has no specific asset pledged to it — no building or machine set aside just for these lenders. Instead, they get paid from whatever value is left over after the secured lenders have grabbed their collateral. Because there's no dedicated backstop, they take a bit more risk, yet this is still the most common type of bond issued by strong, investment-grade companies. Picture waiting in line at a food stall: you're near the front, but a few VIPs with reserved tickets (the secured lenders) get served first from the best portions.
