Articulation
Financial Accounting glossary · The Accounting Cycle & Financial Statements
Definition
The mathematical interconnection of the four financial statements (B/S, I/S, CF, SE); changes in B/S balances tie to flows in the other three statements.
Articulation in plain English
The four financial statements aren't four separate reports that happen to share a company — they're deeply wired together, and articulation is the name for that wiring. The big idea: the net income from the income statement flows into equity, the cash flow statement explains how the cash balance moved, and every change on the balance sheet is accounted for by activity on the others. It's like a set of gears — turn one and the others must turn in step, which is exactly why the numbers have to tie out. If they don't articulate, someone made a mistake.
