Estimated period over which a long-lived asset is expected to be used.
Useful life in plain English
Useful life is the accountant's best estimate of how long a valuable, long-lasting item (a delivery truck, a laptop, a building) will keep being useful to the business before it's worn out or replaced. It matters because that estimate decides how many years the item's cost gets spread across as depreciation. Think of a pair of soccer cleats you expect to last three seasons — that "three seasons" is their useful life, and it's why you'd mentally spread the price over those years rather than feeling like they cost you everything on game one. It's an educated guess, not a guarantee, so businesses can revise it if reality turns out different.
