Base correlation

FRM Part 2 glossary · Credit Risk

Definition

Market-implied correlation assigned to the loss below a tranche detachment point and used to price bespoke credit tranches.

Base correlation in plain English

Base correlation is easier to interpolate than compound correlation because it maps each detachment point to an equity-style tranche. It remains a pricing convention rather than a complete structural dependence model.
