Complement Extreme Shortcut
GMAT glossary · Playbook
Definition
A min/max shortcut for dense three-set overlaps: maximize people who escape at least one attribute, then anyone left must sit in the all-three center.
Complement Extreme Shortcut in plain English
Use the Complement Extreme Shortcut when three dense overlapping sets ask for a minimum or maximum on the center intersection. Clues include minimum possible who have all three and very high coverage percents such as 85%, 90%, or 95%. Flip the ask: maximize the distinct people who escape at least one attribute, then anyone left must sit in the all-three center. Forward-counting the center under high coverage is messy; maximizing the escape team turns a min-intersection into a short subtraction. You never need to fill every petal to answer the extreme. Micro-example: 100 people, 90% have A, 85% have B, 80% have C. Escape pools are at most 10, 15, and 20. If those escapes can be kept disjoint, at most 45 escape, so at least 55 sit in all three.
