A Reading Comprehension task asking why a detail, example, sentence, or paragraph appears. The answer must connect the cited material to its role in the passage.
Function Question in plain English
Ask what would be lost if the cited material disappeared. Its topic tells you what it says; its relationship to the surrounding argument tells you why it is there.
