Call Auction
Market Microstructure glossary · Limit Order Book Mechanics & Order Routing Logic
Definition
A market mechanism that collects orders over a period and then matches them at a single clearing price that maximizes volume.
Call Auction in plain English
Most of the time markets trade continuously — every order matches the instant it can. A call auction works differently: it gathers up everyone's buy and sell orders over a window of time, then, all at once, picks the SINGLE price at which the most shares can change hands, and fills everybody at that one price. It's like a group of friends splitting a pizza order — instead of ten separate calls to the shop, everyone submits what they want, then one combined order goes in at one agreed price. Exchanges often use this to set the opening or closing price of the day, because pooling orders finds a fair, stable price instead of a jumpy one.
