Passage-based reasoning
MCAT glossary · Critical Analysis & Reasoning Skills
Definition
MCAT science passages provide context; questions often require integrating passage data with prior knowledge.
Passage-based reasoning in plain English
On the MCAT, science questions come attached to a short passage — an experiment, a graph, a scenario — and passage-based reasoning is the skill of blending what the passage tells you with what you already know. The passage won't hand you the answer; you have to combine its specific data with the general science in your head. It's like a detective given crime-scene clues who still needs their training to solve the case. The trap is relying only on memory or only on the passage — the best answers need both.
