Antipsychotic emergencies
NCLEX-RN glossary · Pharmacological And Parenteral Therapies
Definition
Life-threatening adverse reactions to neuroleptics, specifically Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) and acute dystonic reactions.
Antipsychotic emergencies in plain English
Priority recognition of 'lead-pipe' rigidity, high fever, and autonomic instability (NMS) requires immediate drug stopping. A common mistake is mistaking NMS-induced agitation for a worsening of the client's psychosis and administering more antipsychotics.
