Assignment, Delegation, and Supervision
NCLEX-RN glossary · Management Of Care
Definition
The transfer of responsibility for a task to a competent person while the nurse retains accountability for the outcome.
Assignment, Delegation, and Supervision in plain English
The nurse must only delegate tasks with predictable outcomes; assessment, teaching, and judgment are non-delegable. A frequent error is delegating a task to unlicensed personnel that requires the 'interpretation of cues' (e.g., evaluating pain after an intervention).
