Epiglottitis versus croup
NCLEX-RN glossary · Health Promotion And Maintenance
Definition
The clinical discrimination between life-threatening supraglottic inflammation (epiglottitis) and subglottic viral swelling (croup) in the pediatric population.
Epiglottitis versus croup in plain English
Rapidly identifying epiglottitis is vital because it constitutes a surgical airway emergency; croup is typically manageable but requires monitoring for respiratory fatigue. The main trap is using a tongue blade or swab to inspect the throat of a child with suspected epiglottitis, which can trigger a total laryngospasm and immediate airway obstruction.
