Minimum Defense Frequency. The fraction of range that must continue to deny an any-two-cards bluff: MDF=1-α=(P)/(P+B). A property of a strategy, not of a hand. Defending to MDF against a value-heavy opponent is a leak.
MDF Concept in plain English
**What it means.** Minimum Defense Frequency. The fraction of range that must continue to deny an any-two-cards bluff: MDF=1-α=(P)/(P+B). A property of a strategy, not of a hand. Defending to MDF against a value-heavy opponent is a leak.
**Why it matters.** In modern No-Limit Hold'em, "MDF" shows up in real decisions — preflop construction, multi-street planning, or bankroll discipline. Misunderstanding it quietly leaks EV even when your instincts feel sharp.
**How to use it at the table.** Name the concept out loud in study, then tag one hand this week where "MDF" changed (or should have changed) your action. Solver screenshots stick only when they attach to a moment you actually played.
**Common mix-ups.** Beginners often confuse related jargon or apply the label after the hand instead of during the decision. Keep a one-line rule in your notes so the term fires before the click, not after the result.
