Beta

Private Credit glossary · Loan Structures & Instruments

Definition

Systematic risk exposure relative to a market factor.

Beta in plain English

Beta answers one question: when the whole market lurches up or down, how much does THIS investment tend to move along with it? A beta of 1 means it swings roughly in step with the market; a beta of 2 means it exaggerates the market's moves (twice as jumpy), while 0.5 means it only half-reacts. Think of boats in a harbor when a big wave rolls through: some barely bob (low beta), others heave dramatically (high beta) — the wave is the 'market,' and beta measures how much each boat rides it. This matters because the part of your risk that comes from the whole market moving ('systematic' risk) can't be erased by owning lots of different investments, so investors demand extra reward for taking on more of it.
