Vintage Diversification

Private Credit glossary · Fund Structures, Returns & Economics

Definition

Allocating commitments across multiple fund vintages to smooth cycle-timing risk in private credit portfolios.

Vintage Diversification in plain English

In investing, a fund's "vintage" is basically its birth year — and just like wine, some years turn out great and some turn out sour, depending on what the economy was doing. Vintage diversification means you don't dump all your money into funds born in a single year; you spread commitments across several years so one unlucky economic moment can't sink your whole portfolio. It's like planting a bit of your garden every spring instead of all at once — if one season gets a late frost, the other plantings still come through. This smooths out the risk of accidentally betting everything on bad timing.
