Definition
The PE firm (synonymous with GP in this context).
Sponsor in plain English
A 'sponsor' is just the nickname for the private equity firm that leads a buyout — the team that puts the deal together, raises the money, and steers the company afterward. It's the same group people also call the 'GP' (general partner): the professionals running the show, as opposed to the outside investors who simply supply cash. Think of them like the lead producer of a movie — they don't fund the whole thing themselves, but they organize everything and are responsible for whether it succeeds. So when you hear 'the sponsor of the deal,' picture the PE firm with its name on it.
