Walk-forward analysis
Quantitative Finance glossary · Quantitative Finance
Definition
A backtesting protocol that re-fits the model on a rolling in-sample window and tests on the subsequent out-of-sample window; the gold standard for evaluating adaptive strategies.
Walk-forward analysis in plain English
Walk-forward analysis is an honesty test for a trading strategy. Instead of tuning your strategy on all your historical data and then patting yourself on the back, you tune it on one stretch of the past, then test it on the NEXT stretch it has never seen — then slide the window forward and repeat, over and over. It mimics real life, where you can only ever learn from yesterday and must face tomorrow blind, like a student who has to pass fresh exams each term rather than re-grading last term's answers. It's considered the gold standard because a strategy that only looks good on data it was fitted to is probably just memorizing noise, not finding a real edge.
