The 20-Second Abandonment Rule

SAT Glossary

If an item has not yielded a foothold - an equation set up, a clause bracketed, or the stem's exact demand identified - within roughly 20 seconds, flag it and move on immediately. On a module-timed adaptive test the cost of a stall is not the lost item but the three easy items it starves at the end of the module. Abandonment is a scoring decision, not a concession.
