The ratio-denominator error

SAT Glossary

A ratio of 3:5 does not mean one quantity is 3/5 of the total — it is 3/8. The denominator of a part's fraction is the SUM of all parts, not the other part, and the exam offers (3)/(5) × 64 = 38.4 as a distractor on essentially every ratio item.
