What is the SAT?

The SAT is a college admission test from the College Board, now taken digitally in the Bluebook app at test centers or schools. It runs 2 hours 14 minutes plus a 10-minute break and has 98 questions in two sections: Reading and Writing (54 questions in 64 minutes, two 32-minute modules) and Math (44 questions in 70 minutes, two 35-minute modules). Each section is scored 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600. The test is multistage adaptive: the difficulty of your second module depends on how you did on the first.

Who it is for

The SAT is for students applying to college. It suits students who want a standardized score to send with their applications, including those taking it on a weekend test date or through SAT School Day. Each college sets its own score policies, so check the schools on your list.

What is tested

  • Reading & Writing: Multiple-choice questions on passages that test reading, vocabulary in context, and grammar and punctuation. The key skill is reading precisely and choosing the answer best supported by the text.
  • Math: Mostly multiple-choice questions, with some that require entering your own answer (student-produced response). The key skill is setting up equations accurately and checking your answer against the question asked.

SAT study plan: 10 weeks, 5 to 8 hours a week

1. Baseline and diagnosis (week 1)

  • Take a full timed practice test in the Bluebook app to see the real adaptive format.
  • List every miss by skill, such as punctuation, transitions, linear equations or data analysis.
  • Pick the three weakest skills in each section to focus on first.

2. Skill building (weeks 2 to 5)

  • Review grammar and punctuation rules, then drill sets on boundaries, transitions and word choice.
  • Rebuild algebra fundamentals: linear equations, systems, functions and percentages.
  • Practice student-produced response questions, which have no answer choices to check against.
  • Use flashcards for grammar rules and key formulas.

3. Timed module practice (weeks 6 to 8)

  • Practice timed Reading and Writing modules of 32 minutes and Math modules of 35 minutes.
  • Aim for high accuracy on the first module, since it sets the difficulty of the second.
  • Review every module, including correct answers, and update your error log.

4. Full tests and polish (weeks 9 to 10)

  • Take a full timed practice test each week in Bluebook.
  • Rehearse test-day logistics, including your device and the 10-minute break.
  • Taper in the final days with light review of your error log.

How to practice

  • Practice on the same Bluebook app you will use on test day so the interface feels familiar.
  • Drill one skill at a time in short sets, then mix skills once accuracy is consistent.
  • Read the explanation for every question to learn the rule or method it tests.
  • For Reading and Writing, find the evidence in the passage before choosing an answer.
  • For Math, write out your setup and reread the question before you submit an answer.
  • Track your errors by skill and revisit your weakest skills every week.

Common mistakes

  • Preparing with materials built for the older paper SAT instead of the digital, adaptive format.
  • Rushing the first module, even though it sets the difficulty of the second.
  • Choosing Reading and Writing answers that sound good but are not supported by the text.
  • Misreading what a Math question asks for, such as solving for x when it asks for 2x.
  • Skipping full timed practice and arriving unprepared for the pace.
  • Not reviewing practice tests, which hides recurring errors.
