Passage: Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion of two surfaces in contact. It occurs because no surface is perfectly smooth; even microscopic irregularities can catch and interlock with one another. This resistance generates heat, which is why rubbing your hands together makes them feel warmer. In many mechanical systems, lubricants are used to reduce friction and prevent wear and tear on moving parts.
Why does friction occur between two surfaces?
- Because surfaces are not perfectly smooth at a microscopic level
- Because rubbing hands together generates excessive heat
- Because the surfaces are moving at different relative speeds
- Because of the use of synthetic lubricants
- Because the heat produced by motion causes the surfaces to expand and press together
