The nurse is initiating a continuous IV heparin infusion for a client with a deep vein thrombosis. Sequence the steps the nurse should take from receipt of the order to starting the infusion.
- Compare the provider order with the medication administration record (MAR).
- Calculate the bolus dose and infusion rate based on the client's weight.
- Perform an independent double-check of the calculations with a second RN.
- Assess the patency and appearance of the peripheral IV site.
- Program the electronic infusion pump and initiate the therapy.
