During the insertion of a triple-lumen CVC, the provider accidentally leaves the distal port open to air. The client is breathing spontaneously.
Why is this a high-risk event?
- The catheter will become occluded by a large clot in the open port, for this client.
- Bacteria from the air will cause immediate septic shock
- The open port will allow blood to spurt out rapidly under high pressure.
- Negative intrathoracic pressure during inspiration can pull air into the vein
