Servicing transfer
Asset-Backed Securities glossary · Asset Specific Nuances
Definition
The handoff of servicing rights and operations from one servicer to another, typically triggered by rating downgrade, performance breach, or asset sale; often disruptive to performance.
Servicing transfer in plain English
Sometimes the job of running the loans gets handed from one servicer to another — that handoff is a servicing transfer. It usually happens for a reason that isn't good news: the current servicer got its credit rating cut, broke performance rules, or the loans were sold to a new owner. The tricky part is that moving thousands of borrower accounts to a new system — like switching banks and having some auto-payments silently break — tends to cause hiccups: missed payments, confused borrowers, and a temporary dip in how well the deal performs.
