Alternative data

CFA Level I Glossary

Alternative data means nontraditional research inputs such as satellite images, credit-card aggregates, web traffic, app usage, or sensor feeds. These sources can give an information edge, but privacy law, data quality, and material nonpublic information rules still apply. Alternative data supplements fundamental analysis; it does not replace it. Candidates sometimes assume “alternative” means free of ethics constraints, which is wrong.
