Definition
A supporting task such as shopping, cooking, or managing medications; not a long-term care benefit trigger.
Instrumental activity of daily living in plain English
A long-term care claim form lists "needs help grocery shopping and managing meds," and a student marks the benefit as triggered. Instrumental activity of daily living is a supporting task such as shopping, cooking, or managing medications, and by itself it is not a long-term care benefit trigger. Triggers usually turn on activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, transferring, toileting, continence, eating) or cognitive impairment. IADLs matter clinically, but they are the distractor when the stem asks what actually opens the policy benefits.
