See-through trust
Certified Financial Planner glossary · Certified Financial Planner
Definition
A trust satisfying requirements permitting its beneficiaries to be treated as designated beneficiaries of a retirement account.
See-through trust in plain English
A retirement account names a trust as beneficiary, and the family needs individual life expectancies rather than the trust itself being treated as a non-person. A see-through trust meets the requirements that let its beneficiaries be treated as designated beneficiaries of the retirement account. Documentation and distribution language matter. If the trust fails see-through rules, you often lose designated-beneficiary stretch or payout timing that the family expected.
