Wait-and-see buy-sell
Certified Financial Planner glossary · Certified Financial Planner
Definition
An agreement deferring the choice between entity redemption and cross-purchase until the triggering event occurs.
Wait-and-see buy-sell in plain English
Owners want a buy-sell funded with life insurance but cannot agree yet whether an entity redemption or a cross-purchase will be best when someone dies. A wait-and-see buy-sell defers that choice between entity redemption and cross-purchase until the triggering event occurs. Flexibility is the feature. Do not treat the agreement as already locked into one structure; the point is preserving optionality until facts at death or disability are known. Funding can still be arranged while the legal path stays open.
