Anchor Rating
Corporate Credit Analysis glossary · Ratings, Syndication & Market Dynamics
Definition
In rating agency methodologies, the preliminary rating derived from combining a business risk profile score with a financial risk profile score, before applying modifiers (e.g., management, liquidity, comparable analysis).
Anchor Rating in plain English
Credit rating agencies grade how likely a company is to repay its debts, and they build that grade in steps. The anchor rating is the rough first-draft grade: they score how risky the company's actual business is (Is the industry stable? Does it have a strong market position?) and how risky its finances are (How much debt? How much cash flow?), then combine those two into a starting point. Think of it like a student's grade based purely on test scores before the teacher adjusts for effort, attendance, or a tough semester. After the anchor, analysts apply 'modifiers' for things like management quality or liquidity to reach the final rating.
