BBB / Baa Rating
Corporate Credit Analysis glossary · Ratings, Syndication & Market Dynamics
Definition
The lowest investment-grade rating tier. BBB-/Baa3 is the IG/HY boundary; downgrade below this line triggers fallen-angel selling pressure from IG-mandated investors.
BBB / Baa Rating in plain English
'BBB' (or 'Baa') is the bottom rung of the 'safe' lane on a company's credit report card — still investment-grade, but only just. The very last notch, BBB-/Baa3, is the exact border between 'safe' and 'junk,' and that border matters a lot: many big investors (like pension funds) are only allowed to hold safe-rated debt. So if a company slips one notch below this line — becoming a 'fallen angel' — those investors are forced to sell, which floods the market and pushes the price down, sometimes harshly.
