Definition
A J.P. Morgan (1997) framework for simulating portfolio credit loss distributions using rating transitions and latent-variable correlations among obligors.
CreditMetrics in plain English
CreditMetrics is a tool (built by J.P. Morgan in 1997) for estimating how much money a big pile of loans might lose. Instead of looking at one borrower, it runs thousands of "what if" simulations across a whole portfolio, asking how many borrowers might get downgraded to a worse credit rating or default — and crucially, it accounts for the fact that borrowers' fortunes are linked (a bad economy hurts many at once). It's like a weather model that doesn't just predict rain for one town but for a whole region, knowing storms tend to hit neighbors together. The output is a full picture of possible losses, so a lender can see not just the average outcome but the scary tail-end ones too.
