Financial Accounting Glossary

An item is material if its omission or misstatement would influence the judgment of a reasonable user of the financial statements. Assessment combines quantitative size with qualitative factors (concealment of fraud, masking a trend reversal, affecting debt-covenant compliance), per FASB Concepts Statement 8 and SEC SAB 99.
