Backwardation / Contango

FRM Part 1 Glossary

States of a futures curve: backwardation has futures below spot (convenience yield exceeds carrying cost, often associated with tight physical supply or high inventory value); contango has futures above spot (storage and financing costs dominate, with low or zero convenience yield). A long position earns positive roll yield in backwardation, negative in contango.
