Case Testing

GMAT glossary · Playbook

Definition

Partitioning a problem into exhaustive, mutually exclusive regimes, solving each regime, then adding the results.

Case Testing in plain English

Use Case Testing when a discrete split (odd/even, positive/negative, with/without X) makes one formula unsafe. Clues include if.otherwise, depending on whether, and two mutually exclusive regimes. Partition into exhaustive cases, solve each, add. One formula across regimes silently violates a constraint in half the world. Name the cases out loud so you can see that nothing is left over and nothing is double-counted. Micro-example: integer n with |n| <= 2, and the expression behaves differently for n = 0 vs nonzero. Case A: n = 0 (one value). Case B: n in -2,-1,1,2 (four values). Add the surviving counts instead of forcing one algebraic line across both regimes.
