Sufficient Assumption

GMAT glossary · Verbal Reasoning

Definition

An assumption that, if true, guarantees the argument’s conclusion follows.

Sufficient Assumption in plain English

An assumption is an unstated idea an argument quietly depends on. A sufficient assumption is a strong one: if you accept it as true, the argument's conclusion is fully locked in, it MUST follow, with no gaps left. Think of it as a bridge wide enough to carry you all the way from the evidence to the conclusion; once that bridge is in place, you're guaranteed to arrive. (This is different from a merely necessary assumption, which is required but might not be enough on its own to seal the deal.)
