Systematic Numeration
GMAT glossary · Playbook
Definition
An ordered written pass through a small finite set so every survivor is ticked once with no omission or duplication.
Systematic Numeration in plain English
Pull Systematic Numeration when a small finite set must be listed without omission or duplication. Clues include how many positive integers less than 50 satisfy., or list all ordered triples. Order the list (usually ascending or descending anchors) and tick every survivor once. Mental scanning skips edge cases; a written ordered pass is the proof of completeness. If the set is large enough that listing feels endless, switch to a formula tool instead of forcing a hand list. Micro-example: positive integers less than 20 that are multiples of 3 or 5. Write 3,5,6,9,10,12,15,18 in ascending order and count 8, rather than bouncing around in your head and missing 15.
