Definition

When working backward through linear sequences, define the unknown neighbor of a known term as x, push forward to the known target, then walk back.

Variable Anchor Tool in plain English

Pull the Variable Anchor Tool when working backward through linear (or near-linear) sequences: you know one term and must recover neighbors without guessing. Structural clues: consecutive terms, working backward, unknown next to a known term, linear sequence recovery. Blueprint: do not guess previous terms. Let the unknown neighbor be x, push the recurrence forward to the known target, solve for x, then walk backward with the same rule. Why it beats the long way: guessing previous terms invites arithmetic slips; one anchored variable keeps the linear-sequence chain exact. Micro-example: Each term is the previous plus 5, and the 4th term is 23. Let the 3rd term be x: x+5=23 so x=18, then walk back 18-5=13 for the 2nd term. Same anchor works for custom linear mixes once the recurrence is written.
