Levels of processing

MCAT glossary · MCAT

Definition

Shallow (visual/structural) → intermediate (phonemic/acoustic) → deep (semantic/meaning) — deeper encoding yields better retention.

Levels of processing in plain English

This is about how DEEPLY you think about something when you're trying to remember it — and the deeper you go, the better it sticks. Shallow processing is noticing surface stuff (what a word LOOKS like), intermediate is noticing how it SOUNDS, and deep processing is thinking about what it actually MEANS and how it connects to things you already know. It's like the difference between glancing at a stranger's name tag versus swapping stories with them for an hour — you'll remember the person you actually talked to. That's why cramming by re-reading (shallow) loses to explaining an idea in your own words (deep).
