Attack rate
NCLEX-RN glossary · Safety And Infection Prevention And Control
Definition
The quantitative measure of disease frequency in a specific population: (New Cases / Population at Risk) x 100.
Attack rate in plain English
Used to determine the severity of an outbreak and the immediate efficacy of community infection control measures. The tempting mistake is using the total population as the denominator instead of the 'population at risk' (those actually exposed to the threat).
