Leaving an unstable postpartum client alone
NCLEX-RN glossary · Safety And Infection Prevention And Control
Definition
An act of clinical abandonment where a nurse exits the room of a client experiencing a postpartum complication (e.g., hemorrhage) without a qualified replacement.
Leaving an unstable postpartum client alone in plain English
Obstetric emergencies can cause rapid cardiovascular collapse; the nurse must stay to provide continuous assessment and intervention. The main trap is leaving the room to personally fetch emergency supplies rather than using the call bell to summon help.
