NCLEX-RN glossary · Management Of Care
Definition
A critical failure mode in Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) where a candidate relies on rote recall of previous item responses instead of demonstrating entry-level clinical judgment.
Memorizing answer letters in plain English
This behavior compromises the accurate estimation of candidate ability (theta) against the safe-practice threshold, which is required to ensure the candidate can practice safely. The main trap is changing a safe, evidence-based answer to chase an imagined difficulty pattern based on the folklore that harder items reveal current pass/fail status.
