Newborn transition failure
NCLEX-RN glossary · Health Promotion And Maintenance
Definition
The inability of a neonate to adapt to extrauterine life, identified through respiratory red flags (grunting, retractions) or persistent circulatory cues like central cyanosis.
Newborn transition failure in plain English
It requires an immediate emergency response to establish an airway; neonates have limited compensatory reserves and deteriorate into arrest rapidly. The tempting mistake is assuming that cues like grunting or central cyanosis are 'normal' parts of transition beyond the immediate first few minutes of life.
