Peritoneal dialysis peritonitis
NCLEX-RN glossary · Physiological Adaptation
Definition
Infection of the peritoneal cavity occurring as a complication of peritoneal dialysis, typically through contamination of the catheter or dialysate solution.
Peritoneal dialysis peritonitis in plain English
Indicated by cloudy effluent and rebound tenderness and requires rapid recognition to prevent systemic sepsis and the loss of the dialysis access site. The tempting mistake is dismissing cloudy dialysate return as a dietary or activity-related issue rather than recognizing it as the primary cue for peritonitis.
