Definition
The progression of a localized lung infection (pneumonia) to a systemic inflammatory state (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) resulting in alveolar collapse.

Marked by refractory hypoxemia; nurses must monitor for the transition from basic oxygen needs to the requirement for mechanical ventilation and high PEEP. The tempting mistake is increasing supplemental oxygen levels for a patient with ARDS without recognizing the failure of oxygen diffusion at the alveolar-capillary membrane.
