Pyelonephritis and urosepsis
NCLEX-RN glossary · Physiological Adaptation
Definition
A kidney infection that has progressed into a systemic inflammatory response (urosepsis). It represents the transition from a localized urinary issue to a multisystem threat.
Pyelonephritis and urosepsis in plain English
It requires immediate monitoring for signs of septic shock, such as hypotension and altered mentation, to prevent organ failure. The tempting mistake is focusing only on localized symptoms like flank pain while ignoring systemic cues (fever, tachycardia) that signal impending shock.
