Recurrent variable decelerations
NCLEX-RN glossary · Physiological Adaptation
Definition
Abrupt, V-shaped decreases in fetal heart rate typically caused by umbilical cord compression. They signal an immediate threat to fetal oxygenation that requires intervention.
Recurrent variable decelerations in plain English
It requires rapid nursing action, such as repositioning the mother, to restore cord blood flow and prevent acidosis. The tempting mistake is assuming variable decelerations are less urgent than late decelerations simply because they are common, failing to recognize the risk of repeated cord occlusion.
