Sedating an agitated hypoxic client before assessment
NCLEX-RN glossary · Physiological Adaptation
Definition
A critical clinical judgment error where behavioral agitation is treated with sedation before checking for the underlying physiological cause, such as low oxygen levels.
Sedating an agitated hypoxic client before assessment in plain English
Can lead to fatal respiratory depression by masking a life-threatening hypoxia cue and reducing the client's respiratory drive. The main trap is prioritizing a psychosocial intervention (managing agitation) over the fundamental physiological priority of airway and oxygenation.
