Task completion bias
NCLEX-RN glossary · Management Of Care
Definition
A cognitive error where a nurse prioritizes completing a list of tasks over performing a comprehensive assessment or identifying new clinical cues.
Task completion bias in plain English
Can lead to missed red flags because the nurse is focused on the 'checklist' rather than the client's evolving status. The main trap is completing scheduled dressing changes or documentation while ignoring a subtle change in a client's respiratory effort or mental status.
