Urine output rate
NCLEX-RN glossary · Physiological Adaptation
Definition
The calculated measure of renal excretion over time, expressed as mL/kg/hr, with 0.5 mL/kg/hr as a common minimum safety threshold.
Urine output rate in plain English
One of the most sensitive early indicators of inadequate cardiac output and failing organ perfusion; failure to monitor this risks permanent renal injury. A common mistake is calculating urine output only at the end of an eight-hour shift, which can mask several hours of significant oliguria or total anuria.
