Ventilator and tracheostomy emergency
NCLEX-RN glossary · Management Of Care
Definition
Acute respiratory failure in a client with an artificial airway, often diagnosed using the DOPE mnemonic (Dislodgement, Obstruction, Pneumothorax, Equipment).
Ventilator and tracheostomy emergency in plain English
It requires rapid assessment for Dislodgement, Obstruction, Pneumothorax, and Equipment failure to restore oxygenation immediately. A common mistake is searching for a problem with the ventilator settings while the client's actual problem is a mucus plug obstructing the airway.
